The Bel Canto Choir is made up of 7th and 8th grade girls. It is our most competitive UIL choir. Here students learn about the different voice types and how to develop their skills and singing technique. The choir learns and performs a variety of music styles. The Bel Canto Choir performs in 5 concerts a year and is judged in the Texas UIL Concert & Sight Reading Evaluation as well as Spring festival competitions.The Bel canto Choir regularly received Sweepstakes, Superior, Best In Class, and Best in Show.
The Diamonds are the female a cappella group at Downing. This extra curricular, audition-only group and performs several times a year. The Diamonds perform music from the 1950s and on and learn advanced singing techniques and harmonization skills.
The Beginner Choirs are 2 choirs at Downing! The Beginner Girls and the Beginner Guys learn, work, and perform separately in order to understand their voices in a stress-free, fun environment. We use games and physical activity to develop their skills and singing technique and to learn how to read music. The Beginners perform in several concerts a year and are judged in Spring festival competitions. The Beginners regularly receive Superior and Best In Class awards.
The Varsity Mens' Choir is made up of 7th and 8th grade boys. In this UIL choir, guys learn to work with their changing voices in a relaxed, fun atmosphere. We use games and physical activity to develop their skills and singing technique. The Varsity Men perform in several concerts a year and are judged in the Texas UIL Concert & Sight Reading Evaluation as well as Spring festival competitions. The Varsity Men regularly receive Sweepstakes, Superior, and Best In Class awards.
